  • Ron Brockmyer
    Updated On: Aug 16, 2023

Ron Brockmyer, 85, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2023. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, member of the Fort Wayne Firefighter community, and world traveler. He was frequently recognized by the firefighters he served alongside as a fireman and those he helped at the credit union in Fort Wayne and as far away as Glacier National Park.

Ron was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana at Saint Joseph Hospital. He graduated South Side High School in 1955 and Purdue University in 1957. He joined the Fort Wayne Fire Department after graduation and spent the rest of his career in firefighting and supporting firefighters through the Firefighter’s Credit Union. He retired from the Fire Department in 1981 and the Credit Union in 2018.

He was devoted to the financial success of many community members in his roles at the Credit Union. He became Credit Union Manager early in his firefighting career, working in a small room at Fire Station 5 in Waynedale. Ron was the manager, served as Treasurer of the board for decades and retired as president at the Credit Union. He oversaw large expansions of the Firefighter Credit Union to include City and County, Police, and other Credit Unions. The Credit Union went from that single room to a county-wide Credit Union with his support and hard work.

Ron was a dedicated member of the Credit Union Community. He continued his education through the Credit Union National Association. He served on the Board of Directors for the Indiana Credit Union League, supporting Credit Unions statewide. At an ICUL convention, he astutely guessed the amount of money in a jar of change and treated at LaTour with his winnings.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents, Waunetah and Herbert Charles Brockmyer, first wife, Anne Byer Brockmyer, son Herbert Russell Brockmyer, and grandson Joshua Ohmart.

Ron married his best friend, Phyllis Brockmyer, in 1982. They have traveled the world and spent nearly every minute of the last 40 years together. They celebrated their 40th anniversary in Greece last November, where Ron won a race and even got a laurel on his head like a real Olympian. Everyone who knew him knew how dedicated he was to Phyllis.

He is survived by his children: Chuck Brockmyer and his wife Carol, Katy (Brockmyer) Mumma and her husband Phil, Melissa (Brockmyer) Dalman and her husband Jim, David Brockmyer and his wife Michelle, and Gary Hopkins and his wife Bethany. He leaves behind 6 grandchildren, Anne Marie Barton, Ophelia Flores-Carr, Kayden Brockmyer, Joe Hopkins, Adam Brockmyer, and Magnolia Hopkins.

Funeral services for Ronald will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 13, 2023 at D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Home Pine Valley, 1320 E. Dupont Rd, Fort Wayne, IN 46825. Burial will follow in Catholic Cemetery of Fort Wayne, 3500 Lake Ave, Fort Wayne, IN 46805.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 12, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Home Pine Valley, 1320 E. Dupont Rd, Fort Wayne, IN 46825.

Memorial Contributions may be made to South Haven Area Emergency Services, Fort Wayne YMCA, Fort Wayne Firefighters Museum or Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
