WILLIAM O. "HOPPY" HOPKINS JR., 69, of Orland, Ind., formerly of Fort Wayne, passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at his home. Born in Fort Wayne, he was the son of the late William O. and Emma Vivian Hopkins Sr. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He retired as District Chief from the Fort Wayne Fire Dept., after 20 years of service in 1985. He then became Lieutenant for the 911 Communications Center and then became an inspector with Neighborhood Code Enforcement Dept., retiring in 2001. He was a member of Lake Missionary Church, Orland; Firefighters 20 Year Club; was past Commander of American Legion Post 423; was a member of Orland Chamber of Commerce; and Fort Wayne Firefighters Union. Surviving are his wife, Sue E.; daughter, Deb (Dean) Sorg of Huntertown; son, William E. (DJ) Hopkins of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Ashley Parrish of Indianapolis, Deanna Sorg and Dean Edward "Bud" Sorg, both of Huntertown; sister, Mary Rediger of Barto, Fla.; six nieces; and three nephews. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Dori Lynn Hopkins-Parrish; and sister, Barbara Roberts. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Road. Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial in Jackson Prairie Cemetery, Orland. Preferred memorials to Camp Jenee; Firefighter's Museum or Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana.
